Antiques dealer Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows that are found in England in which she documents the treasures that she discovers within. A mysterious letter invites her to the little village of Bewlay hidden within the countryside in the far distance, she embarks on train along with her friend to spend the day in Bewlay.
The mysterious man that summoned her to help is not present at her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. An uncompromising landowner denies access to the barrow and even the residents are wary of this woman who is going on her own, in her own vehicle and (gasp!) wears trousers.
The dig of Hob’s Barrow is off to rough beginning. Thomasina starts to experience strange visions…
